Target's Return Policy: Apple & Electronics Exceptions
Target's famous 90-day return policy has massive exceptions for electronics and Apple products. Your RedCard extension won't save you here.
Target is known for having one of the most generous and hassle-free return policies in retail, offering a standard 90-day return window on almost all items. If you use a Target Circle Card (formerly RedCard), you get an extra 30 days, bumping your return window to a massive 120 days.
However, if you are buying a TV, an iPad, or a cell phone, those generous windows disappear completely. Here are the major traps hidden in Target's electronics return policy.
Trap #1: The Apple Exception
Target loves selling Apple products, but they do not extend their 90-day policy to them.
All Apple products must be returned within 15 days. This includes iPhones, iPads, MacBooks, Apple Watches, AirPods, and even Apple-branded accessories. If you buy an iPad as a gift on November 1st, you only have until November 16th to return it (outside of the specific holiday return window extension).
Trap #2: The General Electronics Limit
Even if it isn't an Apple product, standard electronics do not qualify for the 90-day window.
All other electronics and entertainment items must be returned within 30 days. This includes TVs, gaming consoles, PCs, smart home devices, and cameras.
Trap #3: The Mobile Phone Squeeze
The tightest return window belongs to mobile phones.
Mobile phones purchased in-store or online via Order Pickup must be returned within 14 days. Furthermore, if the mobile phone has been opened, Target may charge a restocking fee of up to $35. This applies whether the phone is unlocked or tied to a carrier.
Trap #4: The Circle Card (RedCard) Exemption
Target Circle Card members get an extra 30 days for returns — but this extension does NOT apply to items with restricted return windows.
Your Circle Card will not give you extra time for Apple products (still 15 days), electronics (still 30 days), or mobile phones (still 14 days). Do not rely on your cardholder status to save you if you miss these tight deadlines.
The Good News: The Holiday Extension
Target does offer a lifeline during the holidays. For eligible electronics and Apple products purchased between November 1 and December 24, the return clock does not officially start ticking until December 26.
- For Apple Products (15-day window): Purchases made in Nov/Dec can typically be returned until January 9.
- For Electronics (30-day window): Purchases made in Nov/Dec can typically be returned until January 24.
How to Protect Yourself
- Scan Your Receipt: Use the Target app to scan your paper receipt immediately. The app clearly calculates the exact final return date for every item on the receipt, removing any guesswork.
- Keep the Box: Electronics returns generally require all original packaging, cords, and manuals. Without them, Target may deny the return entirely.
- Beware the Restocking Fee: If you are buying a mobile phone, do not open the seal unless you are absolutely sure. Opening it risks a $35 fee.
