Nordstrom's Return Policy: No Deadline, No Restocking Fee, and the Fine Print Around Both

Nordstrom still publishes a return policy with no time limit and no restocking fees. Here is how it actually works without a receipt, which items are the exceptions, what the Rack will and will not take, and what the Nordy Club adds on top.

Most department stores retired the open-ended return policy years ago. Nordstrom kept it, and the policy page still says so in a single sentence: "There are no time limits for returns or exchanges." The generosity is real, and so are the qualifications that follow it, most of which exist because a policy that trusting gets tested. This guide covers how the policy works in practice, the handful of categories that carry their own rules, and what the Nordy Club loyalty program adds for people who shop there often.

Heads up

Nordstrom's policy is applied case by case at the discretion of store staff, and the company can change it. This guide reflects the return policy and Nordy Club terms published on nordstrom.com as of the date above. Confirm current terms before you rely on them, especially for high-value items.

No Deadline, Handled Case by Case

Nordstrom's return policy states no time limit for returns or exchanges and charges no restocking fees. Returns can go back in store or by mail, free either way, and refunds go to the tender you paid with. Nordstrom no longer puts a return label in the box; you start the return online and print a prepaid label, or show a QR code at an eligible USPS or FedEx location. Mail returns take longer: the policy says 8 to 12 business days for processing once the package arrives, plus 3 to 5 business days for the refund to post. In-store returns post in 3 to 5 business days. Shipping charges on the original order are not refunded.

The phrase to notice is "case by case." Nordstrom's policy language leaves room for staff to decline a return that looks like abuse, and the special-occasion rule below is the most visible example. A worn item with a story is not the same as an item with the tags still attached.

Without a Receipt

Nordstrom can usually find the sale from your card or account. When no sales record exists, the policy asks for personal identification and refunds the item at its current price on a Nordstrom gift card, rather than what you paid to your original payment method. On a marked-down item that difference can be substantial, so the receipt, or the account the purchase was made on, is worth keeping. A gift receipt works too: the refund goes either to the buyer's original payment or onto a Nordstrom gift card.

The Exceptions

  • Special occasion dresses and designer items ship with a tag attached, and the return has to come back in the same condition, with all packaging and the tag still on. This is Nordstrom's answer to the wear-once return.
  • Fine jewelry cannot be returned by mail. It goes back to a Nordstrom store that has a Fine Jewelry department.
  • Balsam Hill artificial trees and decor, sold through Nordstrom, must be returned within 30 days or before December 25, whichever comes first.
  • Watchfinder & Co. pre-owned watches are ineligible for refund or exchange.
  • Car seats are returnable only in the original, unopened box.
  • Boutique purchases must go back to the store where they were bought.
  • Gift cards cannot be returned.
  • Third-party sellers on Nordstrom.com are not covered by the no-deadline rule. Each seller sets its own return-by date, counted from shipment and shown in your order history, and the item must come back unworn, undamaged, unaltered, and with its original tags.

Nordstrom Rack Takes Nordstrom Returns, Not the Reverse Policy

The policy says Nordstrom "also accept[s] eligible returns of Nordstrom and Nordstrom.com merchandise at Nordstrom Rack locations," so a Rack store is a convenient drop-off for a full-line purchase. The two exceptions are fine jewelry and designer items bought at Nordstrom, which cannot go back to a Rack. What does not travel is the policy itself: items bought at the Rack follow the Rack's own return policy, which Nordstrom's page points to separately, so check it before assuming the no-deadline rule applies there.

What the Nordy Club Adds

The Nordy Club is free to join and pays 1 point per dollar, with 1,000 points converting to a $10 Nordstrom Note good at Nordstrom or the Rack. Status runs Influencer, Ambassador, and Icon, and Nordstrom cardmembers start at Influencer automatically.

The alterations benefit is the one with real money in it for anyone who buys tailored clothing, and it is a cardmember benefit rather than a status benefit. Nothing in the program changes the return policy itself; members and non-members get the same no-deadline treatment.

How It Compares

Among the major retailers in our return-policy comparison, Nordstrom's stated policy is matched only by Costco's, and our Costco return policy guide shows that even Costco puts a 90-day clock on electronics. For furniture and home purchases, where Nordstrom is a smaller player, the high-end furniture returns guide covers the specialists whose rules are far tighter.

A Shopper's Checklist for Nordstrom Returns

  1. Keep the tag on anything formal or designer until you are sure. Once it is off, the return may be refused.
  2. Buy on your account or card. A sales record means a refund to your payment method; no record means a gift card at today's price.
  3. Use a Rack store as a drop-off if it is closer. Nordstrom purchases can go back there, except fine jewelry and designer goods.
  4. Carry fine jewelry back in person. Mail is not an option.
  5. Watch the exceptions. Balsam Hill has a 30-day clock, Watchfinder is final sale, and third-party sellers set their own dates.
  6. Cardmembers: submit alteration receipts. Up to $200 or $300 a year comes back in Notes.

The policy is as open as retail gets. Treat it with some care and it stays that way.
