Best Buy Memberships and Geek Squad Protection: What $29.99 and $199.99 Actually Buy
Best Buy's paid memberships quadruple the return window and, at the top tier, bundle up to two years of product protection into most purchases. Here is what each tier includes, how Geek Squad Protection plans work alongside the factory warranty, and the restocking fees that apply to everyone.
Best Buy's standard return window is 15 days, one of the shortest in electronics retail. Its answer to that is a membership: pay a yearly fee and the window becomes 60 days, and at the top tier most of what you buy comes with protection built in. The old Elite and Elite Plus tiers are gone; the current programs are My Best Buy Plus and My Best Buy Total, and the details that matter are in the membership FAQ and the protection plan terms rather than the sign-up page. This guide pulls them together.
Heads up
Membership prices, benefits, and return terms are set by Best Buy and change; the figures below are from bestbuy.com as of the date above. Marketplace items sold by third-party sellers on bestbuy.com are excluded from most member benefits. Confirm current terms before you rely on them.
The Three Tiers
Best Buy's membership FAQ sets the prices at $29.99 a year for My Best Buy Plus and $199.99 a year for My Best Buy Total, plus tax, with the free My Best Buy tier underneath.
| Tier | Annual price | Return window | Product protection |
|---|---|---|---|
| My Best Buy | Free | Standard: 15 days on most products | None included |
| My Best Buy Plus | $29.99 | 60 days on most products | None included |
| My Best Buy Total | $199.99 | 60 days on most products | Up to 24 months of Best Buy Protection or AppleCare+ on most new devices |
The 60-day window is the headline benefit of both paid tiers, and it applies to most products. Activatable devices such as phones keep the 14-day window for everyone, and Best Buy Marketplace products are excluded from the extended window and from protection.
What Total's Protection Actually Is
The Total membership's protection is the reason for the price gap. Per the FAQ, most new devices bought at Best Buy get up to 24 months of Best Buy Protection, or AppleCare+ for Apple hardware, and claims outside the manufacturer's warranty are limited to two per twelve-month period, each subject to a service fee. The service fees are listed before purchase at the Best Buy Protection page, and they scale with the product.
The plan document behind it, Best Buy's Best Buy Protection terms, explains how it sits against the factory warranty: the plan may supplement and run concurrently with the manufacturer's warranty, so you can file with Best Buy or directly with the manufacturer. If you bring a problem covered by both to Best Buy, it may either process the manufacturer's claim on your behalf or handle it under the plan. A product the manufacturer replaces becomes the covered product under your plan once you report the new serial number.

You do not need Total to buy protection. Standalone Geek Squad Protection plans, per the Geek Squad Protection FAQ, can be added up to 60 days after purchase, including plans with Accidental Damage from Handling and Product Replacement Plans. During the manufacturer's warranty period, parts and coverage the manufacturer already provides are not covered by the plan, and you file with the manufacturer. The plans follow the product: if ownership changes, Best Buy updates its records to transfer the plan at no charge.
Accidental Damage from Handling, which the plan terms describe as coverage for "drops, spills, and cracks," is the piece worth paying for on a laptop, tablet, or phone, because the factory warranty and most credit cards exclude it after the first months. The 60-day window is long enough to check what your card already covers, as our guide to AppleCare+ versus your credit card does for phones, before buying.
The Return Rules That Apply to Everyone
Membership changes the window, not the rest of the policy. Best Buy's return and exchange policy sets restocking fees of $45 on activatable devices (prepaid phones excepted) and 15% of the purchase price on drones, cameras, projectors, scooters, mobility devices, and a few other categories. There is no fee if the item is unopened, or if you are in Alabama, Colorado, Hawaii, Iowa, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, or South Carolina, where state law forbids it.
Final-sale and non-returnable items include custom orders, digital content, gift cards, memberships, trading cards, high-capacity batteries above 300 watt-hours, golf carts, e-bikes, and plumbing items. Opened SIM kits, LEGO sets, consumables like batteries and ink, and products that contact bodily fluids cannot be returned once opened. Best Buy asks for the packing slip or receipt and the card used, though it does not state they are mandatory. Our Best Buy return exceptions guide walks through the categories in detail, and the TV protection stack case study shows how the 15-day window compares with Walmart's and Costco's on the same purchase.
Is Total Worth It?
The arithmetic is simple to set up. Plus costs $29.99 for the longer return window. Total costs $170 more for up to two years of protection on most purchases, with a service fee per claim and two claims a year. For a household that buys a laptop, a phone, and a few smaller devices in a year, that can undercut buying plans one at a time; for someone who buys one TV, a standalone plan or the free second year some cards add may cost less. The service fee schedule, published before purchase, is the number to check.
A Shopper's Checklist for Best Buy
- Know your window. 15 days standard, 60 with Plus or Total, 14 on phones regardless.
- Leave the box sealed if you might return it. Unopened items carry no restocking fee.
- Budget the restocking fee on cameras, drones, and phones. 15% or $45, unless your state forbids it.
- Use the 60-day plan window. Check your card's coverage first, then add Geek Squad Protection only for accidents and later years.
- File defects with the manufacturer in year one. The plan defers to the factory warranty while it runs.
- Report a manufacturer replacement to Best Buy. The new serial number keeps the plan attached.
The membership buys time and, at the top tier, protection. The fine print on both is published, and it is short enough to read before paying.
