Amex Purchase Protection and Extended Warranty: What the Card Actually Covers

American Express adds a year to most warranties, covers a new purchase against damage, theft, and even loss for 90 days, and on some cards refunds what a store will not take back. The numbers depend on which card you hold. Here they are, from the benefit guides.

American Express publishes a separate benefit guide for each card, which is why two people with Amex cards in their wallets can get very different answers to the same question. The Platinum and Gold guides say one thing about a stolen laptop; the Blue Cash Everyday guide says another. This guide lays out the three purchase benefits that matter for everyday shopping, with the figures from the current guides and the places where the cards diverge.

Heads up

Benefit terms vary by card and by issue date, and American Express revises its guides periodically. The figures below come from the Extended Warranty and Purchase Protection guides revised April 19, 2024, and the Return Protection guide dated October 2023, as published on americanexpress.com. Confirm your own coverage by calling the number on the back of your card before you rely on it.

Extended Warranty: One More Year, on Warranties Up to Five

The Amex Extended Warranty terms for the Platinum, Gold, EveryDay Preferred, and Delta Reserve cards match the original manufacturer's warranty for up to one additional year, on manufacturer warranties of five years or less, for purchases made in the US or its territories. Coverage is capped at $10,000 per covered purchase and $50,000 per card per calendar year.

The five-year ceiling is more generous than some other issuers, which cut off at three. It comes with its own version of the service-contract rule: if the manufacturer's warranty combined with a purchased service contract exceeds five years, there is no coverage. A one-year factory warranty plus a four-year store plan is fine; add a fifth year of plan and the card benefit disappears. Weigh that before saying yes to a plan at the register like the ones described in our Walmart returns and protection plan guide.

What is not covered runs to the usual list: items sold with an unconditional satisfaction guarantee, anything altered or modified, animals and plants, one-of-a-kind items such as antiques and art, and used items unless refurbished by the original manufacturer. The claim clock is short. Notice of claim should be given within 30 days of the loss, proof of loss within 60 days, and Amex pays approved claims within 30 days of receiving it. Claims start at americanexpress.com/onlineclaim.

Purchase Protection: 90 Days, and the Card Decides the Ceiling

Purchase Protection covers a new purchase charged to the card for 90 days from the purchase date. What it covers, and up to how much, is where the guides split.

TermPlatinum, Gold, Delta ReserveEveryDay Preferred, Blue Cash Everyday
Covered eventsDamage, theft, and lossDamage and theft only
Per purchaseUp to $10,000Up to $1,000
Per card, per calendar yearUp to $50,000Up to $50,000
Natural disasterUp to $500 per eventUp to $500 per event
Window90 days90 days

Two details in the Purchase Protection terms deserve attention. First, the premium cards cover loss, which most card benefits exclude; leaving a new camera in a taxi is a claim on a Platinum and not on a Blue Cash Everyday. Second, the coverage is explicitly secondary: it pays what your homeowner's or renter's insurance, or a store's service contract, does not, though Amex will pay the deductible on that other coverage. Excluded events include property in the temporary care of a third party such as a delivery carrier, items not reasonably safeguarded, and confiscation by authorities. The same 30-day notice and 60-day proof-of-loss deadlines apply.

Return Protection: The Store Says No, Amex Says $300

Some Amex cards carry Return Protection. If you try to return an eligible item within 90 days of purchase and the merchant will not take it back, Amex may refund the full purchase price up to $300 per item, excluding shipping and handling, and up to $1,000 per card account per calendar year, counted by the purchase date rather than the claim date. The item must be in original condition, not visibly used or defective, and the full price has to have been charged to the card.

The list of cards on Amex's Return Protection page includes the Platinum, Blue Cash Preferred, EveryDay Preferred, and Delta Reserve. The Gold card is not on it, which surprises Gold members who assume the two premium cards share every benefit. Check the list for your own card.

How the Benefits Stack With Everything Else

The card's extra year sits on top of the manufacturer's warranty, so the base length decides how far the coverage reaches; our manufacturer warranty basics explains how to read that term. On an Apple product, for example, the one-year Apple warranty becomes two years on a Platinum or Gold, at no cost, which is the number to hold against an AppleCare+ quote. A Cardholder's Checklist for Amex Purchase Benefits

  1. Know which guide is yours. Platinum and Gold share terms; the EveryDay and Blue Cash cards do not.
  2. Charge the whole purchase to the card. Return Protection requires the full price on the card; the other benefits require at least a portion.
  3. Report within 30 days. Notice of claim within 30 days, proof within 60, for both Extended Warranty and Purchase Protection.
  4. Keep the itemized receipt and the warranty. Both are on Amex's proof-of-loss list.
  5. Do the five-year math before buying a plan. Manufacturer warranty plus service contract over five years cancels the extra year.
  6. Ask the store first, then Amex. Return Protection only pays after the merchant refuses the return.

The guides are specific, the caps are generous on the premium cards, and the deadlines are the only part that regularly catches people. Report early and the benefit does what it says.
